Privacy is amana — a trust. Barakah is built to support your salah, not to surveil you. This policy explains what we collect, why we collect it, how long we keep it, and how to control it.
The short version: we do not sell your data, we do not read the contents of your messages or locked apps, and we collect the minimum we need to make prayer locks work. Everything below is the detailed version.
Privacy principles
- Minimum data. We collect only what the service needs to work.
- No sale. We never sell or rent your personal data.
- On-device by default. Sensitive settings stay on your device where they can.
- No surveillance. We do not track movement, read messages, or scrape contacts.
- Honest defaults. Permissions are opt-in and explained in plain language.
What we collect
Account data
Email address and basic profile information when you sign up or join the waitlist. Used to contact you about your account and to deliver the service.
Device and usage data
Limited technical data such as device model, OS version, app version, language, time zone, and anonymized event counts (for example, “prayer lock triggered”). Used to keep Barakah stable and to fix bugs.
Prayer settings
Your chosen calculation method, locked-app selections, and prayer-window preferences. Stored on your device. Where you opt in to cloud sync, these are stored under your account.
Location
With your permission, your approximate location is used to calculate prayer times. You can grant precise or approximate location at the OS level. We do not track movement and we do not sell location data.
Payments
Purchases are processed by our payment provider. We receive a transaction reference, country, and basic billing details. We never see or store your full card number.
Support communications
When you email us, we keep your message and our reply so we can help and to keep a record of what was promised.
What we do not collect
- The contents of your messages or any locked app.
- Your contacts, photos, calendar, health data, or microphone audio.
- Detailed movement traces or continuous background location.
- Browsing history outside of Barakah.
- Advertising identifiers for cross-app tracking.
How we use data
- Run the service — calculate prayer times and apply your prayer locks.
- Support you — answer emails and resolve issues.
- Improve Barakah — diagnose crashes and measure feature usage in aggregate.
- Communicate — send service emails (receipts, security, important updates). Marketing emails are opt-in and unsubscribable.
- Meet legal obligations — tax, accounting, and lawful requests.
Retention
Account and purchase records are kept for as long as your account is active and for the period required by law (typically 6–7 years for financial records). Anonymized usage data may be retained for product analytics. You can request deletion at any time.
Your rights
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to:
- Access the personal data we hold about you.
- Correct inaccurate or incomplete data.
- Delete your data (subject to legal retention).
- Port your data to another service in a common format.
- Object to or restrict certain processing.
- Withdraw consent at any time, without affecting prior processing.
- Lodge a complaint with your local data-protection authority.
To exercise any of these rights, email hello@heybarakah.app. We respond within 30 days, or sooner where required by law.
Children and families
Barakah is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal data from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided us personal data, contact us and we will delete it. Parents and guardians who use Barakah to support a child’s salah practice remain responsible for managing that child’s use of the app.
Security
We use encryption in transit (TLS) and at rest where supported by our providers, vetted infrastructure, role-based access, and the principle of least privilege for internal access. No system is perfectly secure, but we work hard to protect your data and will notify you of material incidents as required by law.
International transfers
Your data may be processed in countries other than your own, including the United States and Europe, where our providers operate. Where required, we rely on standard contractual clauses or equivalent safeguards.
Notifications
Push notifications (prayer reminders, account alerts) are opt-in and can be turned off in your device settings. We send service emails (receipts, security, important updates) as part of operating the service. Marketing emails are opt-in and include an unsubscribe link.
Region-specific notices
European Economic Area, United Kingdom, and Switzerland
Where the GDPR (or UK GDPR / Swiss FADP) applies, the controller of your personal data is Barakah App. Legal bases include performance of contract (delivering the service), legitimate interests (improving Barakah, security), consent (marketing emails, precise location), and legal obligation (tax, accounting). You have the right to lodge a complaint with your supervisory authority.
California
California residents have rights under the CCPA/CPRA, including the right to know, delete, correct, and limit the use of sensitive personal information. We do not sell or share personal information for cross-context behavioral advertising.
Other regions
Where local law (such as Brazil’s LGPD, Canada’s PIPEDA, or similar) provides additional rights, those rights apply to you in addition to anything else stated here.
Automated decisions
We do not use your personal data for automated decision-making or profiling that produces legal or similarly significant effects on you.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy as the product evolves. Material changes will be highlighted on this page or communicated to you in-app or by email. The “last updated” date above always reflects the current version.
